The Arts Council recently received publicity in a Keller Williams Realty Flyer. Helen Martin was featured as the Community Relations Chair for the MI Arts Council.
There is an excellent article in today’s Mercer Island Reporter regarding the MIVAL Holiday Show at the Community Center Gallery. The article featured Jason Gamrath, a 2005 Mercer Island High School graduate, who will display and sell his glassware at the show.
Mostly Music in the Park:
Literary & Shakespeare:
In Judy’s absence, Jennifer Berner reported that last week’s lecture by Lance Roades, “Storytellers and the Cinema” was not very well attended. They will try it again in the future.
King County Performance Network:
Beth reported that she attended the last KC performance Network meeting on Vashon Island in Katalin’s place.
Katalin reported that the most recent show was very successful. Five paintings sold at $3,270, 25% of which goes to the gallery. The MIVAL show goes up next Monday, October 16. The artist reception is on Thursday, October 19 to coincide with 3rd Thursday.
Jennifer Berner reported that a request has been received from the Mercer Island Covenant Church to use a photograph of two pieces of public art - the little boy and girl (across the street from QFC) and the rabbit (in front of the library) - in a flyer. The consensus was that it would be acceptable with the stipulation that the photos give credit to the artist, the Arts Council and the fact that it is public art.
Helen reported that she has drafted a Calendar of Events for use by the Arts Council. She requested that Arts Council members email her with items to post in the calendar. She will email the calendar to Eileen prior to scheduled meetings so that copies can be printed for distribution.
The Fall Dance with Swamp Sole has been scheduled for Sunday, November 19. Dance lessons will be given from 4:00 to 5:00 pm and the dance will follow from 5:00 to :700 pm. Helen has secured sponsorship from Aljoya for up to $2,000 in publicity.
A flyer has been printed up for distribution. Ads are planned for the MI Reporter along with posters that can be posted in local businesses. Information will also be posted on the City website in the calendar section.
Helen reported that she also has designed tickets for the Dance as well as for movies. Jennifer Berner reported that tickets will be numbered consecutively so that they can be consigned and sold off site. They can also be sold at the community center. The Dance Committee will discuss this further at their next meeting. They will also discuss the process for selling food and whether or not the cost of food will be included in the cost of the admission ticket.
Helen will connect with Diane Mortenson, Facilities Coordinator at the Community Center regarding food serving requirements at the Community Center.
Jennifer Berner reported that Andrea Woolley has resigned from the Arts Council. She feels she no longer has the time to commit. Jennifer distributed four new applications for appointment to the Arts Council. Applicants included Nancy Weir Weyna, Jane Ditzler, Kevin Curry, and Cynthia Nuzzi. It was the consensus that all four applications should be forwarded to the Mayor for his approval. Jennifer is hopeful that new members will be on board by the November or December meeting.
There has been a recent reorganization of the Parks & Recreation Department. Jennifer will be stepping away from the day-to-day Arts Council activities. A new position has been created, Arts and Special Events Coordinator, and that person will be the main contact for the Arts Council. Jennifer will continue to be involved in the Arts Council through the new coordinator. She expects the transition will take several months.
