Call To Order:

Beth Brennen called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm in the Luther Burbank Room, Community Center at Mercer View, 8236 SE 24th Street, Mercer Island, WA 98040. Introductions were made around the table.

 

Roll Call:

Present:  Beth Brennen, Judith Powers Leithe, Katalin Pearman, Marcia Thomas, Helen Martin, Tudor Sherrard, Jane Ditzler, and Kevin Curry.  Absent: Councilman  Sven Goldmanis, Sandra Schilling, Cynthia Nuzzi and Ellen Hochberg.

 

Staff Present: Jennifer Berner, Amber Britton and Eileen Hemmis Trifts.

 

Appearances:

There were no appearances.

 

Minutes:

It was moved by Member Judith Powers Leithe to approve the regular meeting minutes of March 7, 2007.

The motion was seconded and passed.

 

Chair’s Report:

Beth Brennan, Chair, distributed the agenda for the April 28 Arts Council Retreat to beheld at Skunk Bay Lighthouse in Hansville, WA.

 

Mostly Music in the Park: 

Marcia Thomas reported that all of the bands have been chosen. Jen Berner reported that we are starting to receive signed contracts from the bands.  Maggie Moo’s is on board as a vendor for all of the concerts. They will be bringing their mascot too. The poster and brochure are in the works. The brochure will be included in May and June utility billings to all Island residents. 

                       

Literary & Shakespeare:

Judy Leithe reported that upcoming events include Shakespeare’s 443rd Birthday celebration on April 21st and the Second Annual Sonnet workshop.  Perry Lorenzo will be returning with a presentation on Merchant of Venice and The merry Wives of Windsor in July.  Contracts have been received from Wooden O Theatre for this season.  This will be their 14th year.

 

King County Performance Network:

Beth Brennan and Jane Ditzler attended the meeting in Burien.  Site specific performance videos were featured.  The two of interest were “Moving Strategies” by Intamin Theatre with readings, plays and discussions and “3 Minute Theatre Project” featuring puppets that go through a complete performance in three minutes.

 

Mercer Island has committed to host the November 15 KCPN meeting.

 

Gallery:

Katalin Pearman reported that the current gallery show, Northwest Water Color Society, has been very well received.  The gallery is booked through the end of the year.

 

There are several new pieces slated to be installed in the outdoor gallery this year.

 

Jane Ditzler voiced concern over the possibility that the new light rail project may encroach on the Sculpture Garden.  Jen advised that she will check into it, but hasn’t heard anything as of yet.  However, it is noted that the Sculpture Garden is on DOT property.

 

 

Public Art:

No report.

 

Community Relations:

 

Helen reported that the Arts Council calendar ha been updated with literary program dates, gallery receptions & MMIP performance dates. Copies were distributed.

 

There was some discussion regarding advertising in the Mercer Island Reporter and other possible free advertising that is available on the Island. Jen advised that the Reporter publishes an Island Guide every year and we provide information regarding Parks & Recreation programs, which includes information on Arts Council programs.  Helen reported that she will write up information and send it to Jen for her review.  The deadline for this year’s Island Guide is April 26th.

 

It was agreed that advertising would be further discussed at the upcoming retreat.

 

Staff Report:

Amber Britton reported that Helen, Katalin and Jane will serve as jury members for SC! Juried Arts and Crafts this year.  They will be jurying April 23 through the 27th.

 

Jen advised that elections are due to take place at the May 9 meeting.  Members present indicated their interests in positions are as follows:

Jennifer will check with Sandra Schilling to see if she is interested in continuing as Vice Chair as well as being an Associate for Mostly Music in the Park.  She will also check with new member, Ellen Hochberg, as to her interest.
