Call To Order:

Beth Brennen called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm in the Luther Burbank Room, Community Center at Mercer View, 8236 SE 24th Street, Mercer Island, WA 98040.

Roll Call:

Present:  Beth Brennen, Judith Powers Leithe, Katalin Pearman, Ellen Hochberg, Marcia Thomas, Tudor Sherrard, Kevin Curry and Cynthia Nuzzi.  Absent: Councilman  Sven Goldmanis, Sandra Schilling, Jane Ditzler,  and Helen Martin.

Staff Present: Jennifer Berner, Amber Britton and Eileen Hemmis Trifts.

Appearances:

There were no appearances.

Minutes:

It was moved by Member Judith Powers Leithe to approve the regular meeting minutes of March 7, 2007 with the following amendments:

  • Under roll call - Cynthia Nuzzi was absent.
  • Under Staff Report - Add King County Performance Network Chair under Program Positions.

The motion was seconded and passed.

Chair’s Report:

Beth advised the Council that there is an opportunity to purchase two Florence Palmer Oil Paintings.  These were done during I-90 construction.  They have been offered to the city for $500 each or $800 for both.

Following some discussion regarding where they could be hung if purchased and the procedure for making the purchase, it was determined that prior to making a decision Beth will attempt to borrow them for the next Arts Council meeting for a closer look.

In follow up to the Arts Council Retreat, highlights have been emailed to everyone. There is currently approximately $100,000 in the 1% for Arts Fund and the Council has budgeted $60,000 to spend on a public art project in 2008.  A recap of the Public Art Discussion and possible projects was distributed by Jennifer Berner.

Beth added that a large MIAC event board to be located at Mercerdale Park could be added to the list under consideration.  Jennifer Berner said she would research the signboard ordinance and found out what size restrictions might apply.

Mostly Music in the Park:

In Sandra Schilling’s absence, Jennifer gave an update on Mostly Music in The Park.  The posters are complete and have been distributed for mailing. The mailers are also complete and will go out to Island residents in the May and June utility bill mailings.  Copies are available for distribution by Arts Council Members.

There was some discussion of the new kiosk on 78th street and whether or not the poster could be posted at that location.  There is some confusion over whether or not this is a city kiosk.  Jennifer will check into it.  In any event there are a number of new parks kiosks where they can be hung. She will find out when they will be available for posting.

Literary & Shakespeare:

Judy Leithe distributed copies of flyers for the Sonnet Writing Workshop and Contest and Shakespeare Summer in the Park Programs.

King County Performance Network:

There was some discussion regarding the fact that the King County Performance Network is a facet of 4Culture. The suggestion was made that a more appropriate program name might be  “4Culture” vs. “King County Performance Network”.  No decision was reached.

Gallery:

Katalin Pearman reported that the current gallery show, Northwest Water Color Society, has been very well received.  The Society has asked to be considered for an annual show.  Katalin suggests bi-annually, based on availability.  It was noted that two of the top artist awards went to local artists - Jenny Reese and Wanda Hughes.

A new piece of art by Larry McLaughlin will be installed in the outdoor gallery in April and another in June.

Public Art:

No report.

Community Relations:

Staff Report:

Jennifer reported that a grant from 4Culture that was a part of the 2006-2007 Sustained Support Program has been awarded for the second year, 2007.  The award amount is $7,200, which is more than last year’s award. This is revenue that we bring in to offset our expenses.

Amber Britton reported that we currently have 51 Arts and Crafts Vendors for Summer Celebration. We are continuing to recruit (except for jewelry)
