Design Commission - Minutes

Chair Maloof called the meeting to order at 6:58 PM in the Council Chambers, 9611 SE 36th Street, Mercer Island, Washington. 
Chair Emmett Maloof and Commissioners Steve Bryan,Susanne Foster, Bert Loosmore, and Lucia Pirzio-Biroli, were present. 
George Steirer, Principal Planner, was present
Chair Maloof motioned to approve the minutes from March 9, 2011. The minutes were approved by acclamation.
AGENDA ITEM #1 – Open record public hearing: Addition to the Mercer
George Steirer, Principal Planner responded to questions from the Design Commission. No staff presentation was given.
Wes Wood of Dollar Development, located at 2737 78th Avenue SE, provided comments on behalf of the applicant.
Stan Hanson of Stillwell Hanson Architects, located at 7601 Greenwood Avenue N, Seattle, WA, gave the presentation for the applicant and responded to questions from the Design Commission.
Chair Maloof opened the hearing for public testimony at 7:11 PM.  No one requested to speak, and the public hearing was closed at 7:11 PM.
Commissioner Bryan moved to grant final approval for the addition as depicted in Exhibits 1, 2, and 3 in the April 13, 2011 staff report to the Design Commission subject to all of the approvals recommended by staff and to authorize the Design Commission Chair to sign the findings of fact of behalf of the Design Commission.
Commissioner Foster seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously with five ‘yeas’ and zero ‘nays’.
Councilmember Bassett gave the Council Liaison Report. He stated that the City Council had approved the Design Commission meeting start time change from 7:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Additionally, Councilmember Bassett provided an update on the Island Crest Way project.
George Steirer provided an update on proposed ordinances concerning the decision authority for design review of both minor exterior modifications in the Town Center and Wireless Communications Facilities.
Additionally, Mr. Steirer informed the Commission that a Design Commission specific training and barbeque would be scheduled for June.
It was also stated that an election for Vice-Chair would be held at the next regular Design Commission meeting.
