Design Commission - Minutes Wednesday, February 26, 2014
CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Richard Erwin called the meeting to order at 7:09 PM in the Council Chambers, 9611 SE 36th Street, Mercer Island, Washington.
Chair Richard Erwin, Vice-Chair Colin Brandt, Commissioners Susanne Foster, Nadine Laszlo, and Tami Szerlip were present.
Scott Greenberg, Development Services Group Director; George Steirer, Principal Planner; and Sung Lee, Assistant Planner, were present.
MEETING MINUTES APPROVAL:
The Design Commission reviewed the minutes from the November 13, 2013 meeting. Commissioner Laszlo motioned to approve the minutes. Commissioner Szerlip seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously.
STUDY SESSION – Islander Middle School Development at 8225 SE 72nd Street
Sung Lee provided the staff report and responded to questions from the Commission.
Brian Carter and Young Sun Lee of Integrus Architects provided a presentation for the potential applicant and answered questions from the Design Commission.
George Steirer responded to questions of the Commission.
The Commission provided the following comments:
Look at the storm ditch on 84th Ave SE
Look at potential issues of parking stalls on 84th Ave SE
Consider the Gator as an art feature
Be prepared to address the acoustics caused from large wall on south west portion of the site for neighbors to the west
Continue to consider scale on the south side of the building, as it relates to middle school aged children.
Consider the canopy entrance potential to ‘no where’ at Phase II.
Consider relocating the bus parking to allow for improved access to parking for the soccer field
Awareness of light impacts to the neighbors to the east and the west.
Note: Portables to be removed in the fall of 2016
Staff had no additional comments.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is March 12, 2014.
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Brandt moved to adjourn. Commissioner Foster seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm.
