The meeting was called to order at 5:03 p.m. at the City of Mercer Island Caucus Room, 9611 SE 36th Street, Mercer Island, WA.
Commissioners Blakney, Hill and Winterbauer. Secretary/Chief Examiner Segle, Chief Deveny, Police Commander Elsoe, Personnel/Training Sergeant Holmes
Absent: Fire Commander Mauldin
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Moved by Blakney and seconded by Hill to approve the minutes of December 11, 2001 as submitted. Motion carried.
There were none.
DECEMBER POLICE AND FIRE ROSTERS:
There were no changes to the December Police roster. There were no changes to the December Fire roster.
DUAL ENTRY-LEVEL AND LATERAL POLICE OFFICER RECRUITMENT PROCESS UPDATE:
Sergeant Holmes discussed the results of the recruitment process. He noted that the oral board failure rate was high, but the 9 entry-level candidates and 1 lateral candidate on the final eligibility lists are high quality candidates. Chief Deveny explained that he is satisfied with the ten quality candidates and said that other cities are not getting a lot of good candidates.

Firefighter Eligibility List: Sergeant Holmes discussed the results of the entry-level Firefighter oral boards. He explained that the new names on the list would be added to the bottom of the existing three names on the list.
MOTION: Moved by Winterbauer and seconded by Hill to certify Entry-level Firefighter eligibility list, dated December 21, 2001. Motion carried.
Oral Board Participation for Police and Fire Interview Processes: Police Commander Elsoe reported that having a Police Officer serve on the oral board process for Firefighter interviews; and a Firefighter serve on the oral board process for Police Officer interviews was successful and effective. Chief Examiner Segle agreed to bring back draft language for the Civil Service Rules to the next regularly scheduled meeting.
The next Regular Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 5:00 p.m., in the Caucus Room at City Hall.
