Debbie was elected to City Council in November 2011. She was Deputy Mayor 2016-2017 and was appointed mayor in 2018. Having moved to Mercer Island as a child, she is a graduate of Mercer Island High School. Debbie has received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University. She was awarded a Rotary Scholarship from the Mercer Island Rotary Club and received a second master’s degree in economics from University of Sussex in the UK. She lives on First Hill with husband Brian, her two daughters, and Bernese Mountain dog "Buzz".
Debbie has had an extensive career in the tech industry. She has lived and worked for Oracle and Microsoft in Central Europe, Africa, and Asia focusing on technical and economic development, government relations, and business/operations management. Most recently she was responsible for strategy and planning for Microsoft’s Enterprise and Partner organizations.
On Council Debbie has focused in particular on diversity and inclusion, transportation and growth management issues. She is currently on King County’s Growth Management Planning Council and Eastside Transportation Partners.
