Evan Maxim - Director
Evan Maxim was appointed Director of the Community Planning and Development Department in November 2018 after serving the Interim Director since June 2018.  He was first hired at the City as the Planning Manager in June 2016.  Previously, Evan worked for the City of Sammamish for 14 years as a Senior Planner and Associate Planner.  At Sammamish, Evan worked on many different current planning projects, including the first Town Center developments for that City, the City Hall, and the Sammamish Community and Aquatic Center.  Evan also managed several long-range planning projects, including the update of Sammamish’s critical areas regulations, tree retention ordinance(s), and adoption of the low impact development regulations. Prior to Sammamish, Evan worked for the City of Issaquah.  Evan is a native to this area, growing up in Bellevue, and except for a brief college absence, has lived in east King County for the last 40+ years.  In his free time, Evan enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, reading, and gardening.

What do you enjoy most about leading your department?
I lead a department full of smart, competent, and dedicated public servants that are working to address a constant variety of new challenges and situations.  It is important to me that we do our “best work” as a department for the community on Mercer Island.  To get our “best work” done, requires that I use several different “soft” and “hard” skill sets, which in turn ensures that I am constantly challenged to address new and complex issues.

What do enjoy most about working for the City of Mercer Island?
I am constantly learning and developing professionally to address the changing needs of the citizens of Mercer Island and the City leadership.  Our department is charged with implementing a significant part of the community’s vision for the island – we handle everything from bathroom additions, to new mixed-use buildings, to the development of regulations that guide future growth.  It’s exciting to be part of such varied and challenging work!
