Governor Inslee Recognizes Mercer Island as Solar Community

April 9, 2015 - Yesterday, Gov. Jay Inslee recognized the City of Mercer Island, along with Bellevue, Edmonds, Kirkland, and Seattle as “Northwest Solar Communities,” acknowledging their various initiatives that have increased residential solar installations by nearly 200% since 2013.

The Northwest Solar Communities program joined together local governments, Utilities, and solar industry stakeholders from Washington and Oregon to bring down the cost of solar for homeowners through actions such as simplifying and standardizing permitting, streamlining Utility interconnection, and support for planning and financing.

Speaking about last summer’s rooftop Solarize program, Mercer Island Mayor Bruce Bassett said: “In just twelve months, we tripled our solar capacity by adding 47 new installations. Residential solar fits so well into the evolving story of renewable, clean energy for our community, and aligns with our carbon commitments under the King County-Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C).”

Clean technology, emphasizing solar, is one of seven key areas for action outlined in Gov. Jay Inslee’s Executive Order 14-04 to reduce carbon pollution in Washington state and improve energy independence through use of clean energy. “It is terrific to see cities rising to the climate challenge and their local utilities supporting those efforts,” said Inslee.

For the past few months, the City of Mercer Island has been working to build on this achievement by planning a large investor-funded array on the roof of City Hall. For more information about that project, including the opportunities for participation, contact the City Sustainability Manager, Ross Freeman at ross.freeman@mercergov.org, or call 206-275-7662.

The City appreciates grant funding for the Solarize program, without which it would not have been possible; primary funders were the WA Dept of Commerce (Northwest Solar Communities), and the King Conservation District.
