City Announces Hiring of New City Attorney

.
New City Attorney Kari Sand
May 11, 2015 - City Manager Noel Treat is pleased to announce the hiring of a new City Attorney who will oversee in-house legal matters for the City of Mercer Island, starting May 27.

Kari Sand has served as a city attorney or assistant city attorney for various regional cities, including most recently the cities of Medina and Sammamish, while working for Kenyon Disend PLLC. Prior to joining that firm in 2005, Ms. Sand served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Tacoma for six years and as an associate attorney for two years at a general civil practice firm in Tacoma.

In recent years, Ms. Sand’s practice has focused on all areas of municipal law, with particular emphasis on local taxation and tax litigation, land use, condemnation, fair housing and anti-discrimination laws, public bidding, public disclosure and Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and employment law matters.

City Manager Noel Treat said, “We had a strong pool of candidates, but the hiring committee was unanimous in its selection of Kari as the top choice; she has the skills, the experience, and the personality to serve our City well. We look forward to her joining the team.”

Ms. Sand replaces retiring City Attorney Katie Knight, who has represented City interests and advised the City Council for almost 10 years throughout a number of high profile cases.  “Katie will indeed be sorely missed – all of us have benefited greatly from her sage advice and tenacious nature,” said Noel Treat.  “We wish her all the very best as she heads to retirement in Colorado.”

Kari Sand received her law degree from the University of Oregon and is a member of the Washington State Bar Association.
