Concerning Advertising and the Protect Our Parks Initiative

Apr 7, 2016 - In response to community confusion over the sponsor of an advertising insert placed in the latest edition (Weds, April 6) of the Mercer Island Reporter newspaper, the City has issued the following statement:

The advertising insert, entitled “Having Second Thoughts?" concerns a citizen-driven signature gathering effort underway for the Protect Our Parks Initiative. The City has no connection to this advertising insert, nor to the initiative effort.
The sponsor of the insert –Support Mercer Island Parks and Arts– is not a City program or department. The City Clerk did not sponsor this advertising insert.
The contact information of the City Clerk appears on the insert solely because by law, she must receive not only petition signatures, but also requests from signatories to have his or her name removed.
Not only do City ethics policies prohibit City staff from engaging on electoral issues, but State law prohibits it (RCW 42.17A.555).
