Drowning Offshore at Luther Burbank Park

July 21, 2019 - At approximately 5:00pm today, Mercer Island Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to a possible drowning, just offshore, at Luther Burbank Park (2400 block of 84th Ave SE).  As Officers and Firefighters arrived, it was determined a 47-year-old male had been paddle boarding in Lake Washington, without a life jacket, and fell off the board into the water.  Bystanders attempted to swim out to assist, but this was to no avail. The possible drowning location was outside and north of the swim beach area, approximately 30 to 50 yards offshore.
Mercer Island Police and Fire Dive Team, along with Renton Fire and King County Sheriff’s Office Dive Teams began a search.  Approximately one hour later, the male was recovered from the water by dive team personnel. He was in about 17 feet of water and lifesaving efforts were made by Bellevue Paramedics.  Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mercer Island Police Department will work with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death.
