2009 Fireworks Regulations

Celebrate Safely!
Celebrate Safely!

Thinking of celebrating Independence Day by lighting up fireworks in your friendly neighborhood park or school ground?  City officials don’t want to spoil anyone’s 4th of July fun, but would like to remind the public that fireworks are illegal and prohibited in all parks and school district properties.  The City encourages residents to celebrate safely by enjoying the community’s annual fireworks display at Luther Burbank Park on July 11 as part of Summer Celebration festivities.

To help insure another pleasant and safe Fourth of July, the City of Mercer Island will again take extra steps to deter fireworks activities in parks by teaming up with Parks and Recreation, Maintenance, Fire and Police with increased foot, bike and vehicle patrols throughout the park system.  Similar compliance efforts in past years have yielded positive results with a significant decline in fireworks related complaints and incidents.

In addition to public notification efforts, other measures will be taken to secure park sites, including gating and closing parks and parking lots at 10 pm, locking all park restrooms and securing portable restroom units to prevent damage and vandalism, and periodic irrigation of parks and ballfields, The public can also expect to see the physical presence of City staff stationed at various park locations to enforce the daily 10 pm park closure time during the week of July 3rd.  Mercer Island School District staff will also be on-hand providing support to City staff by patrolling their properties to insure no fireworks are discharged.

Fireworks can be purchased on Mercer Island between June 28 and July 4.  Discharge of legal “safe and sane” fireworks is allowable one day only, July 4 from 11 am to 11 pm. MICC 8.35

Possessing, using or exploding any fireworks, firecrackers or explosives of any kind in any park except as part of a duly authorized public fireworks display is prohibited (MIMC 9.30.070). are posted throughout the City’s parks and open space properties.

Only “consumer fireworks” as defined by the State Fire Marshal and RCW 70.77 State Fire Marshal Fireworks Site are allowed and are authorized only if they are sold from a Washington State licensed stand.

·         Sparklers

Fireworks can also be enjoyed at a community fireworks display. A public fireworks display will occur on Mercer Island (Luther Burbank Park) on Saturday, July 11 at approximately 10:15 pm, as part of Summer Celebration! festivities.

The State Fire Marshal urges citizens to follow these precautions when using fireworks:

·         Before you light fireworks - "Be Prepared!" Purchase only legal fireworks, available at approved stands. Talk with family members and guests about the laws for your area. Place pets indoors as they may become frightened. Keep a bucket of water nearby in which to place all used fireworks. Have a water hose or fire extinguisher nearby to put out stray sparks. Clear a level area away from things that can burn. Know the emergency number to call for your area, your address/location, and basic first aid. Teach your children to "stop, drop, and roll" if their clothes catch on fire.

·         When lighting fireworks - "Be Safe!" Set family boundaries. Have a designated adult light all fireworks. Do not allow young children to light fireworks. Use eye protection, wear safety goggles. Light one at a time, move away quickly, and keep at a safe distance until the display is finished. Use only outdoors, away from anything that can burn. To prevent injuries, never throw fireworks and never hold fireworks in your hand.

·         After you finish - "Be Responsible!" Clean up all debris when finished. Duds can be dangerous; if a device does not light or fire, an adult should wait at least fifteen minutes, approach it carefully, and place it in a bucket of water. Be sure all unused fireworks, matches and lighters are out of the sight and reach of children.
