Sustainable Practices on Mercer Island
Current Guiding Principles
In March 2012, Mayor Bruce Bassett announced the appointment of 11 community members and two Councilmembers to the Sustainability Policy Task Force. Set with the mission of developing sustainability policy that will direct the Cityís actions and priorities in being a sustainable City, the Task Force identified policy topics and action items that would have the greatest near term opportunity to reduce the Islandís environmental impact, save money both for City operations and for residents, and improve Islandersí quality of life. Over the course of six committee meetings and a dozen subcommittee meetings, the Sustainability Policy Task Force worked to define sustainability-related issues that affect Mercer Island residents.
One of the key outcomes of the report was the hiring of a full-time Sustainability Manager position, charged with taking these policies and developing and implementing a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan for the City. That work is currently underway.
