A City of Mercer Island Business License is required for any business that will be conducting, maintaining, operating, or engaging in business within the City limits during any tax year.
At this time, there is no self-serve, online option.
Obtaining a Regular Business License:
1) All businesses must have a current Unified Business Identification (UBI) number through the State of Washington Business License Division. (To obtain a UBI number, see instructions for filing online with the State Department of Licensing.)
2) New businesses need to complete a City of Mercer Island Business License application. The license fee is $30.00 with an annual renewal fee equal to the license amount.
3) Submit both the completed City application and the license fee to the City of Mercer Island Finance Department for review and approval. This can be done via the mail or in-person. Contractors should also submit a copy of their current State Contractors license.
4) Applications are reviewed for completeness and compliance with City Ordinances by the Building, Planning, Fire and sometimes the Police Departments.
Upon approval of the application, the Finance Department issues the license to the business. Mail-in applications will receive the license by mail. In-person licenses are usually issued in just a few minutes.
Note: License must be renewed each calendar year to remain active.
The City of Mercer Island collects a Business and Occupation tax from all active Business License holders with gross revenue in excess of $150,000 per calendar year. See the Business and Occupation Tax section for additional information.
