School-Based Counselors
School Staff 2013-2014
Working in partnership with the Mercer Island School District, professional Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) counselors are based on site in each public school on Mercer Island. Staff provide counseling services for children, adolescents and their families; classroom presentations; and group activities to deal with personal difficulties and to promote healthy emotional and interpersonal development. At the high school and middle school, substance abuse services include prevention, education, intervention and assessment and referral.

Elementary Schools

"Our counselor is especially open to making children in our school feel safe, secure and comfortable. I can't imagine teaching without this wonderful service." - Teacher

MIYFS Counselors provide services to the three elementary schools in the Mercer Island School District. They provide individual and group counseling, classroom guidance and consultation to parents and school staff. The program is designed to foster student potential, enhance student achievement, and prevent personal difficulties.

Islander Middle School

"Students feel that they are heard and cared about - they feel less overwhelmed by personal issues when they know there is someone who will listen and help them sort through whatever they are dealing with." - Teacher

An MIYFS Counselor is located full-time at the middle school to provide individual, group and family counseling, classroom presentations, Natural Helpers leadership, and conflict mediation training. A significant amount of support is also provided to parents and school staff.

An MIYFS Prevention Specialist works part-time at the middle school and provides individual and group counseling, classroom presentations and consultation with parents and staff around the prevention of substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors. The Specialist also is involved in projects that support the prevention efforts of the school and community.

A full-time MIYFS Counselor is on site to provide information, crisis intervention, short-term counseling, group support and referral to other services. A full-time Alcohol and Drug Intervention Specialist is also available to students at the high school and at Crest Learning Center to provide education, support, intervention, and assessment and referral to other sober support services. Each staff also offers consultation with parents and school staff if needed.
