Family Assistance & Support

The Family Assistance and Support Program serves low income Mercer Island residents. Resources include case management and emergency assistance with such basic needs as food, rent and utilities. An Emergency Assistance Fund supported by the community provides limited financial assistance to Mercer island families, and staff help families and individuals in need to access resources and develop longer term plans. A limited food pantry is maintained at our office. During the winter season, the Family Assistance Program coordinates a holiday sponsorship program for approximately 50 families in need.

The Family Assistance Program also administers a scholarship program for the Mercer Island Preschool Association. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to contribute financially to these efforts. Please contact Family Assistance & Employment Coordinator Cheryl Manriquez at (206) 275-7869  for more information.

We can help in the following ways:

  • Assess financial difficulties and discuss options
  • Find resources to help during a financially tough time
  • Locate emotional support
  • Access low-cost medical care
  • Identify and build your strengths
  • Overcome barriers to success
  • Refer you to other MIYFS services

Mercer Island Food Pantry

MIYFS has a food pantry at the Luther Burbank Administration Building in Luther Burbank Park. The food pantry is used by many Mercer Island families throughout the year. We depend on the contributions of local churches, families and service clubs to replenish the pantry.

We welcome your non-perishable donations at these locations:  1) The MIYFS office in Luther Burbank Park; 2) Banner Bank on 78th Ave SE.  Donations of food are tax deductible.  Please ask for a receipt when dropping off donations at the Luther Burbank Building.

Cereal, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, pasta and sauces, school lunch snacks and canned fruit are examples of food most often needed.
