2015 Comp Plan Update - Completed June 2016
Every City and County in Washington is required to adopt a Comprehensive Plan that addresses five key areas: land use, housing, transportation, utilities, and capital facilities (RCW 36.70a.070). The Shoreline Master Program goals and policies comprise the sixth element of the Comprehensive Plan, reflecting the importance of environmental protection and stewardship of the islandís miles of shoreline.
All comprehensive plans must be reviewed and updated every eight years in accordance with the Washington State Growth Management Act (RCW 36.70A.130), and must be consistent with the State Environmental Policy Act, regional planning documents such as King County Countywide Planning Policies and Vision 2040, and the Cityís zoning and development codes.

The 2015 update of Mercer Island's Comprehensive Plan is underway, with preliminary scoping reviewed and approved by the City Council on February 3, 2014. The Planning Commission served as the primary working group and advisory body for the updated Plan, and held eight public meetings before making a recommendations to the City Council in November 2014.

How to Get Involved (click here for upcoming meetings)
A Public Participation Plan has been prepared for the Comprehensive Plan Update process. This Plan recognizes the public as integral and important stakeholders of the plan, and guides early and continuous public involvement. The City hosted a public open house on Thursday, October 23, 2014 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Here are other ways to get involved in the Update:

- Request to be notified via email when new materials are available for review or new information is released.
- Review draft materials on this Plan Update webpage, the Planning Commission meetings webpage, the City Council meetings webpage, and at the public counter at City Hall.
- Discuss concerns or priorities with a Planner via in-person conversation, phone, email or mail.
- Speak with a Planner at community outreach events.
- Comment on draft materials via mail or Email. The Email address is: CompPlanUpdate@mercergov.org (Written comments will become a part of the public record, and a spreadsheet of comments and staff responses will be included in the meeting packets as appropriate.)
- Attend a City Council meeting.

The Planning Commission served as the working group and advisory body for the Comprehensive Plan Update. Planning Commission meetings are regularly scheduled for the first and third Wednesdays of each month, and open to the public. All Comprehensive Plan Update materials prepared for the Planning Commission will be posted here and on the Planning Commission (click here) page, and will be available to view at the public counter.
The Planning Commission's recommended Draft Plan will be reviewed by the City Council on May 4 and June 15, 2015. As the final adopting body, the City Council will review the Draft Plan and the Planning Commissionís recommendations and findings prior to Plan adoption. City Council meetings are regularly scheduled for the first and third Mondays of each month, and open to the public. All Comprehensive Plan Update materials prepared for the City Council will be posted here and on the City Council (click here) webpage, and will be available to view at the public counter. The City's webpage calendar lists upcoming meetings (or changes to the normal schedule).
