Letter to Regional Elected Officials

Thank you for lending your support toward the City of Mercer Islandís I-90 efforts. Below is the list of elected officials to contact. Our suggested message includes the following points:

Date _______________

Dear _______________ (fill in elected official name):

As a resident of Mercer Island, I ask for your assistance in preserving access and mobility during the East Link Light Rail construction project. In June, Sound Transit and WSDOT would permanently close the Island Crest Way ramp serving westbound I-90 to Single Occupant Vehicles (SOVs), creating serious traffic and safety hazards for Mercer Island over at least the next six years. I believe this is a poor use of the taxpayer funds which were used to construct the ramp.

The Sound Transit and WSDOT proposal is dangerous because it would divert heavy traffic from our only four-lane arterial through narrow neighborhoods and a Town Center that was not designed to accommodate it. Thousands of commuter vehicles would be diverted each day to streets with no sidewalks and centerlines, traversing through school zones and creating safety risks for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

A solid majority of our community voted for the East Link Light Rail project, and we still support it, but we have been counting on Sound Transit and WSDOT to live up to their commitments to provide effective mitigation during construction, addressing parking, access and mobility. They committed to this via binding agreements that have been in place for decades.

We depend on our public agencies to honor agreements and come together to solve difficult challenges in an open and collaborative way. I am asking for your help in holding them accountable.

Sincerely,

(Resident Name)
