How to Apply

Learn about our employment process and how to apply for City positions.  Police and Fire positions have a separate application, testing, and hiring process.  Follow the links below for further information:

Job Announcement

For each position advertised, a job announcement is provided. It is important that you review the job announcement carefully to see if you meet the minimum qualifications before completing the application packet. The City of Mercer Island posts new job openings to GovJobsToday.com as they become available.

Employment Application

The City of Mercer Island requires a completed online application to be considered for any City job opening. The City accepts applications for open positions only. If you apply for more than one job opening, a separate application is required for each.

Please go to GovJobsToday.com to create a secure application account and apply online instantly.  You will also be able to view the screening status of jobs for which you have applied.

Please note that online applications are stored on a secure site. Only authorized employees and hiring authorities have access to the information submitted. It is important that your application be complete and indicates all relevant education and experience you possess.  Applications may not be accepted if incomplete.

Applicants are considered for employment without regard to race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, creed, age, marital status, veteran's status, disability status, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state, or local law. If you require accommodation to complete the application, testing, or interview process, please contact the Human Resources Department at 206-275-7794.

Resumes and Other Attachments

We encourage applicants to attach resumes or other information that will assist us in the review and selection process. However, you must complete the requested information in the application packet, even if it duplicates your resume or work history.

Interviews and Testing

As interviews are set up, you will be notified of the date and time of the interview, the type of interview, and if any testing will take place.  Only those applicants who are interviewed and subsequently not selected will receive notification.

Employment Requirements

Applicants who are offered employment with the City of Mercer Island will be required, at the time of hire, to provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States in accordance with the 1986 Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act. A list of acceptable documents verifying identity and authorization to work will be provided to applicants who are offered employment.  The City of Mercer Island will also perform a background check for applicants who are offered employment.

General Info

The core workweek is forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.  However, most departments offer flexible work schedules, depending on the position. Some positions require weekend, evening shifts, holiday, and/or overtime.

The City of Mercer Island provides a competitive salary for all positions, based on regular market review. Salaries of employees falling under a collective bargaining agreement are adjusted according to conditions of the agreement.

Except for those employees who are under contract, all employees are "at will" employees. This means the City or the employee may terminate employment at any time. Some City positions require union membership. This requirement is indicated on the job announcement.

The City encourages career development for its employees and, when possible, seeks to promote qualified employees from within the City.
