The following information is provided to assist you in understanding our employment process.
For each position advertised, a job announcement is provided. It is important that you review the job announcement carefully to see if you meet the minimum qualifications before completing the application packet. The City of Mercer Island posts new job openings to GovJobsToday.com as they become available.
The City of Mercer Island requires a completed online application to be considered for any City job opening. The City accepts applications for open positions only. If you apply for more than one job opening, a separate application is required for each.

Please note that online applications are stored on a secure site. Only authorized employees and hiring authorities have access to the information submitted. It is important that your application be complete and indicates all relevant education and experience you possess. Applications may not be accepted if incomplete.

Resumes and Other Attachments
We encourage applicants to attach resumes or other information that will assist us in the review and selection process. However, you must complete the requested information in the application packet, even if it duplicates your resume or work history.
Interviews and Testing
As interviews are set up, you will be notified of the date and time of the interview, the type of interview, and if any testing will take place. Only those applicants who are interviewed and subsequently not selected will receive notification.
Applicants who are offered employment with the City of Mercer Island will be required, at the time of hire, to provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States in accordance with the 1986 Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act. A list of acceptable documents verifying identity and authorization to work will be provided to applicants who are offered employment. The City of Mercer Island will also perform a background check for applicants who are offered employment.
The core workweek is forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. However, most departments have implemented a 9/80 work schedule for those employees wishing to work a flex schedule. Some positions require weekend, shift, holiday, and/or overtime.
The City of Mercer Island provides a regular progression of salary increases for specific job classifications. Most positions provide for step increases, on anniversary of hiring date. Salaries of employees falling under a collective bargaining agreement are adjusted according to conditions of the agreement.
Except for those employees who are under contract, all employees are "at will" employees. This means the City or the employee may terminate employment at any time. Some City positions require union membership. This requirement is indicated on the job announcement.
