City of Mercer Island / Parks & Recreation / Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

Mercer Island Parks and Recreation offers many opportunities for volunteers to make a difference in the community, with activities ranging from senior transportation to caring for our trails and forests!

The mission of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department Volunteer Program is to actively promote a mutually rewarding relationship between volunteers who offer their talents, skills and time, and staff who will support them in their efforts to cooperatively steward the community's parks, natural areas, and recreation and social programs.

Below you will find our current volunteer opportunities, staff contacts, and required forms and waivers. We look forward to hearing from you!

Bus Driver and Helper for Senior Transportation
Volunteer senior bus drivers and helpers are needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, offering transportation for Island seniors to and from their homes and program sites. We need your driving skills and enthusiasm! Call Amber Britton, Recreation Coordinator for Senior Resources and Volunteers, at 206.275.7841.

volunteers       Forest Stewardship and Restoration
Mercer Islandís parks and open space properties are valuable community assets. Volunteers help maintain them and improve their ecological health by removing invasive plants, planting native trees and shrubs, and mulching. Volunteers are welcome to join in lively weekend group events (view calendar), or work independently as part of our Forest Stewardship Program. For more information, please call Kim Frappier, Natural Resources Specialist, at 206.275.7882.

Trail Maintenance and Construction
With over 30 miles of trails in Mercer Islandís parks and open spaces, there is always plenty of work to be done maintaining the islandís walking routes! Work on trails may include improving drainage, resurfacing, decommissioning or constructing, or cutting back vegetation. If youíre interested in what work is currently available to volunteers, please call Andrew Prince, Trails and Urban Forestry Specialist, at 206.275.7872
