Benefits Programs

The City of Mercer Island strives to offer employees a comprehensive benefits package. Among its features for non-represented employees are (represented employee benefits are similar and outlined in their respective union contracts.):

  • Ten paid holidays plus on floating holiday per year.
  • Twelve paid vacation days per year; 15 paid vacation days per year after 4 years of service; 18 paid vacation days per year after 9 years of service; 21 paid vacation days per year after 14 years of service.
  • Three personal paid days off per year.
  • Eight hours of paid sick leave accrued per month.
  • Opportunity to earn up to 18 hours of wellness leave each year.
  • Participation in the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems – Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) or Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Retirement System (LEOFF).
  • Tuition reimbursement program (after one year of service). Limitations apply.
  • Flexible work schedule opportunities. Limitations apply.
  • Ridematching service and carpool incentive program.
  • Employee 24-hour gym.
  • Medical Insurance through Regence Medical Blue Shield or Group Health. The City pays the total cost of the employee’s premiums and the majority of the cost for family coverage. (Pro-rated amount for part-time employees.)
  • Dental Insurance through Washington Dental Service. The City pays the total cost of the employee and their families premiums. (Pro-rated amount for part-time employees.)
  • Vision Insurance through Vision Services Plan. The City pays the total cost of the employee and their families premiums.
  • 125% of annual salary in a life insurance benefit.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance.
  • Long-Term Disability Insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program. (Counseling sessions for employee and family members.)

Regular full-time and part-time employees are eligible for insurance benefits beginning the first day of the month following the hire date. The City pays a monthly allowance on behalf of each employee to cover the full costs for medical, dental, and vision premiums. Employees who choose to cover their family are responsible to pay any amount that exceeds the allowance. The City offers a variety of supplemental insurance options that employees can choose from based on their individual and family needs.
