Maps are powerful visual communication tools. They are used to represent our everyday world using symbols, colors, text and photos. These elements are arranged in many different ways to provide a bird's eye view of the earth -- and our City.
We use a combination of computer software, hardware, people and data to create our maps. This combination is known as a Geographic Information System (GIS). It is a valuable tool for analysis, planning, decision making and problem solving. It is used to store, update, retrieve, manipulate and display data.
We currently maintain over 100 layers of data in our GIS. We support all City departments with maps for everyday use and special projects. In addition to making maps we can use the GIS to analyze patterns and relationships.
For examples of our maps please see our map collection.
Part of the City's GIS data can be viewed on the EGov Alliance's GIS Portal at http://www.nwmaps.net/
