Sustainability

Puget Sound Energy Wind Turbines

As expressed in the City's Comprehensive Plan, since 2006:

"Mercer Island strives to be a sustainable community: meeting the needs of the present while preserving the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We consider the relationship between the decisions we make as a community and their long-term impacts before committing to them."

In April 2023, the City adopted its first Climate Action Plan to strategically guide its planning and investments in meeting emissions and resiliency goals. This plan built on many years of prior work and other City planning documents. The implementation of many actions identified in the CAP are already underway.

The City's sustainability programs work to advance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions on Mercer Island, demonstrate climate leadership, and serve as a model for environmental collaboration and innovation.
