Building Green

A green home uses less energy, water and natural resources, creates less waste and is healthier for the people living inside, compared to a standard home. Buildings have a tremendous impact on the environment, including:

  • 38% of carbon dioxide emissions
  • 39% of energy use
  • 77% of electricity consumption
  • 41% of water use
  • 60% of non industrial waste
  • 40% of raw material use nationwide

A home can be built green or you can make it green later. A green makeover can happen all at once, or it can be a gradual process. And it can be independently certified by a rating agency (e.g. LEED, or Built Green), or not.

But what it all comes down to is a new way of thinking and a new way of living. From a more energy efficient kitchen to a tree-filled backyard paradise, your home can be green top to bottom, inside and out. In addition to the wide range of benefits that come from living in a green home, many local and state agencies and companies offer rebates, tax breaks, and other incentives.

Did you know that since 2016 Mercer Island City Code has required all new construction in Town Center to be certified green construction (LEED Gold, or Built Green 4-Star, or better)?
