El Jahncke and his wife Gayle have lived on Mercer Island since 1978, where he has been actively involved in community and school affairs, having served on the School Board and its strategic planning committee from 1993 to 1997.

All three of their children have attended Mercer Island Schools. El's extensive business background includes more than 30 years of investment, management and financing experience in commercial real estate. He is currently president of Washington Capital Management, an investment management company with $3.5 billion of pension assets under management. El is a graduate of Stanford and received his MBA from Columbia. As a naval officer, he served two tours of duty with the Navy Seals in Vietnam and was in charge of the Navy's swimmers for the Apollo 12 and 13 recoveries.
