For the seventh consecutive year in a row the national nonprofit KaBOOM! recognized Mercer Island as a 2014 "Playful City USA." KaBOOM!, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy activity for children, selected Mercer Island as one of 212 cities across the country as a Playful City USA community for its continuing dedication to play.
"KaBOOM! Playful City USA" program highlighted the award-winning Adventure Playground, where kids create forts, swings, bridges, tree houses and more with staff supervisors facilitating the building. During each Friday of the summer, a Fun Mobile arrives at a different City park providing arts, crafts, music, entertainment, lawn games and a 'slip and slide.'

Comprehensive and diverse services include recreation, athletic, social, art, special event, park and facility operations/maintenance, open space acquisition, urban forestry management and other services.
Services are provided to preschool age children, youth, teen, adult, family and senior populations through partnerships with community agencies, businesses and institutions.
