Island Crest Park Renovation Project
In 2014 the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department was awarded a grant through the Recreation & Conservation Office for the renovation of Island Crest Park. The grant, totaling $500,000, will help pay for the replacement of the existing lighting system at Island Crest Park, and the conversion of the entire south field to synthetic turf. The grant requires $150,000 in donations from the community. We need your help to make this project a reality, allowing for year round play for Mercer Islanders and other regional athletes. Mail a check to 2040 84th Ave SE, attn: ICP Project, or use the PayPal link below to donate. Your help is greatly appreciated! More Information.
Do you work for a company that will match your donation? If so, search for Mercer Island Parks and Recreation on the Benevity website https://causes.benevity.org/ to give to your employer.
Update (May 1, 2017): The bids for this proposed project were returned significantly over budget. Since that news, and due to the worsening condition of the north outfield and the public request from Mercer Island baseball and Boys and Girls Club soccer and football, City Council has directed Parks and Recreation to pursue installing synthetic turf on the north field at Island Crest Park. Design is currently underway. City staff will return to Council with options and costs in early June. Options include installing lights or just electrical conduit, shock pad under the synthetic turf and various infill options. If Council approves the final project scope, construction is expected to move forward mid-August through November. Depending on the scope of the project, some fall sports will have to find other field space during construction. In the longer term, Parks and Recreation is planning to install synthetic turf on the South field as well, providing an all-weather sports facility. This goal depends on future capital funding that has not yet been identified.
Update (June 6, 2017): On June 5, City Council approved a new synthetic turf outfield for the north field and new LED lights on the north half of the park. Their decision was motivated by groundswell from parents who came forward saying that the sports community can raise an additional $50,000 by the June 21 deadline. Already the Baseball Booster Club and the Football Booster Club have each pledged $10,000. It is up to individuals and matching donors to fund the remaining $30,000. Please help in any way you can.
