Previous News Release --

Aug 9, 2017 - The Mercer Island City Council is in the final stages of reviewing the proposed updates to the Residential Development Standards.  At their meeting on August 7, they completed their first round of review and amendments to the proposed code updates.

City staff are now working to prepare a package of outreach materials to educate the public on the contents of the Council’s direction.  By the end of next week (i.e. August 18) staff will post a final draft of the code, a matrix comparing the current and proposed code provisions, and a series of videos summarizing the major proposed changes to the City website

These outreach materials will also be promoted via  Facebook, NextDoor and other social media channels.  The videos will provide a means for the public to learn about the proposals currently under consideration without having to attend an in-person meeting during this busy travel season.  Questions or comments can be shared with staff and City Council by emailing residential@mercergov.org.

City Council will conduct their final review of the draft code amendments on Tuesday, September 5 and Tuesday, September 19 (beginning at 7:00pm at Mercer Island City Hall), with adoption of the ordinance anticipated on September 19.  Both of these meetings will include time for public comment.  If adopted on September 19, the new code could go into effect as soon as October 27.

City staff will plan to conduct targeted outreach between adoption of the ordinance and the effective date to educate permit applicants, builders, architects and residents of the new code provisions.  Staff will continue this education effort in the weeks and months after the effective date to ensure all residents and customers understand the provisions of the code.
