The Mercer Island Fire Department's Special Operations encompasses a variety of services and organizations. By definition Special Operations refers to those services that are beyond the basic firefighter level. Specifically it refers to Technical Rescue Services which include: Dive & Water Rescue; Trench Rescue; Confined Space Rescue; Rope Rescue; and Collapse Rescue.
The Mercer Island Fire Department is responsible for managing any medical, fire or rescue event within the jurisdictional or mutual aid boundaries of the City of Mercer Island. Some of these events are beyond the capability of local resources to handle alone and require assistance from outside organizations.
State law requires specialized training for firefighters who perform these types of technical services. Mercer Island Firefighters are trained at various levels in all these types of rescue disciplines, but often the mitigation of these types of emergencies involve more than a single jurisdiction.
The Mercer Island Fire Department does not provide all levels of services in all these types of emergencies, but is trained to manage them and prepare the site for those resources that can. Often times this involves requesting assistance from either the Seattle Fire Department, or from the Bellevue Fire Department and other Eastside Cities.
The following pages describe Mercer Island firefighters' level of training, and the organizations that they are a part of in providing those services. If you would like additional information please contact us.
