The Desire to Serve
The Ability to Perform
The Courage to Act
The City of Mercer Island is a suburban community located in the middle of Lake Washington, between the cities of Seattle and Bellevue, and is traversed at its northern end by the Interstate 90 Freeway.
The Mercer Island Fire Department (MIFD) serves the entire 6.2 square mile island, and the surrounding waters. Additionally MIFD assists adjacent communities through mutual aid and automatic aid agreements; and those neighboring communities reciprocate with the same services. These agreements result in a "seamless response," which means the closest unit(s) respond to minimize response times and provide higher quality services, thereby utilizing tax revenues efficiently. Additionally, MIFD is a participant in the King County Fire Resources Plan - a system for sharing resources between jurisdictions.
The Mission of the MIFD is to contribute to Mercer Islandís reputation as a safe, friendly, economically thriving community in which to live, work, learn, play and visit.
The Fire Department achieves its mission by providing the highest quality local and regional fire prevention, suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, disaster preparedness and community education services possible within the resources provided to the Department.
The Fire Department is professional, compassionate, highly-trained, and committed to state-of-the-art technology to provide services that meet or exceed the expectations of the Mercer Island community.
These services include but are not limited to the following:
- Fire Prevention Services
- Emergency Preparedness Services

The Fire Department provides these services from two facilities, Station 91 and Station 92. Visit our Station 91 & 92 pages for more information about these facilities and how they are equipped and staffed.
The Fire Department's administrative hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, however the stations are open 24 hours per day for any emergency.
Blood -pressure readings are available at either station. If there are no firefighters at the station to take your reading, it is because they are out providing assistance to someone else.
