The Mercer Island Police Department is interested in partnering with residents to prevent crimes from occurring and to report crimes and suspicious activity when they are observed.  Our citizens are our best partners in crime prevention because they are the ones who are familiar with their neighborhoods and can often times spot an out-of-place person, vehicle or activity.  Neighbors watching out for neighbors is one of the best tools we can employ in the fight against crime.

Project Childsafe Icon Project Childsafe: Preventing Gun Accidents and Misuse - Disposal of Unwanted Firearms, Ammo or Fireworks

The MIPD is one of 15,000 law enforcement agencies that has partnered with Project ChildSafe, the largest gun safety education program in the U.S., developed to distribute educational messaging and free firearm Safety Kits. The kits include a cable-style, gun-locking device and a brochure that discusses safe handling and secure storage guidelines to help deter access by unauthorized individuals. Over 37 million kits have been distributed -- starting in June 2018 you can get your kit/lock at the Mercer Island Police Department.

Dog Walker Watch Paws On Patrol

Paws on patrol is a crime prevention partnership between the police department and dog walkers in our community.  The strategy is to increase the number of eyes and ears in the community in an effort to report crimes or suspicious activity in progress.  Participants receive training from the police department which will help them effectively report suspicious activity, enabling the police to respond and investigate the situation or prevent crime from happening.

Med Take-Back Medication Disposal Options

Unused and expired prescription medications pose a public safety and health concern, and misuse can have serious medical consequences. For some time, MIYFS and MIPD have been working together to find a lasting solution for our community regarding the proper disposal of expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals.
