Lock It or Lose It! Campaign

Lock it or lose it

Although our burglary rate here is comparable to other nearby jurisdictions, MIPD believes that with residents' help it can achieve the lowest burglary rate in the region. Did you know a recent analysis of five years of MIPD crime data revealed some trends and behaviors that may be surprising to some residents:

  • Almost half (41%) of MI home burglaries annually involve an unlocked door (or window)
  • Burglaries occur more than 1-2 times/week, on average
  • 65% of the crimes occur during the day
  • In 80% of the cases, no one was home
  • In 88% of cases, no alarm was activated

The simplest way to tackle this problem is for all residents to always lock doors whenever they leave the house, or when they go out of sight to other parts of their property. This includes the garage.

Many residents in a recent online survey asked for help remembering to lock doors, and wanted to hear more real-life stories of crimes or "near-misses" from their neighborhood. The LOCK IT or LOSE IT campaign will address these outreach needs through news stories, social media, and in the local newspaper. Download a campaign flyer below.
