Project Childsafe: Preventing Gun Accidents and Misuse - Disposal of Unwanted Firearms, Ammo or Fireworks

The MIPD is one of 15,000 law enforcement agencies that has partnered with Project ChildSafe, the largest gun safety education program in the U.S., developed to distribute educational messaging and free firearm Safety Kits. The kits include a cable-style, gun-locking device and a brochure that discusses safe handling and secure storage guidelines to help deter access by unauthorized individuals. Disposal of Unwanted Firearms, Ammo or Fireworks

Did you know Mercer Island Police can assist you in disposing of any unwanted firearms, ammunition, or fireworks?

The department offers its community walk-in appointments to turn in any unwanted guns, ammunition, or fireworks at 9611 SE 36th Street, Mercer Island WA 98040.

When turning over a firearm:

  1. Call ahead and let officers know you have items to bring in for destruction and ensure availability – non-emergency dispatch 425-577-5700.
  2. If you know how to safely unload the firearm before bringing it into the Police Department, please do so.
  3. Please do not bring a visible firearm into the police department. Put the firearm in a bag or a box and tell the officer that you are bringing a firearm in for destruction. Don't remove the firearm from the bag/box.
  4. If you have a long gun or rifle, officers can meet you in the parking lot.

What happens to the items I bring in?

  • Firearms will be checked to be sure they have not been reported stolen.
  • Firearms turned in to the Mercer Island Police Department are melted down at West Seattle's NuCor Steel plant.
  • Ammunition and unused fireworks will be disposed of safely in accordance with Federal and State laws.
